You will want finer grits than typically come with the machine. They usually come with something like 36 grit and 60 grit. For HSS tool bit grinding, I like 60 and 120. You will also need a container of water to dunk in. Some grinders or grinder stands include one. Make sure the grinder comes with a dressing tool, or buy one if not.

Noob questions on lathe tooling

I can't help with using inserts. I only use HSS tool bits on my craftsman 12x36 lathe. Mikey's (RIP) thread on grinding HSS tool bits is well worth the read. The basics are on page 11 or 12 as I recall. I found it was very difficult to grind HSS tool bits until I got a 1x42 belt sander. What a world of difference the belt sander made.

It makes perfect sense that if a wheel type works on a surface grinding machine for a HSS application it would work on a pedestal type grinder. A "K" hardness is not what I would use on my SG. you can machine 62 rockwell HSS with carbide at like 15 surface feet and .0001 feed rate. I've faced and drilled a couple of gage balls for special drop indicator tips. I'd rather hand grind a boring bar than try to machine one. trying to machine one would be a really really difficult job. Doncha got a surface grinder?
